We currently have 30 members who represent various vocations in and around the three communities we serve: Girard, Liberty and McDonald. Rotary International is one of the world's largest service organizations, and we are just one of around 30,000 clubs worldwide. Other clubs in our local District 6650 can be found by following this link! You can also jump directly to the Rotary District 6650 homepage. We meet weekly at Amen Corner in Girard on Tuesdays at 6:00 p.m. for dinner and a program, but NOT on the last Tuesday of the month. If you would like to attend a meeting, simply call a Rotarian you know! Rotary International operates from within four primary areas, or Avenues: Club (the operations of the local group), Vocational (generally, each member's vocation can be represented only once), International (our outreach to develop world understanding and peace), and Community (our efforts to help those close to home.)
Club Avenue of Service: In order to raise funds to operate, we have dues and several fund-raisers. These include: a Steak Fry in July, a reverse-raffle dinner in November, a theatre party or other entertainment event in the spring, and various things during the year as needed, such as holiday gifts, silent auctions, and trips to Las Vegas. Vocational Avenue of Service: We each bring information about the business world to Rotary to see how it can help develop a better understanding about how each of us earns a living. We have vocational talks from members so we get to know each other better. We also have tours of local businesses and speakers who give us a perspective of their vocation. We also reach out to local high schools through vocational education programs. International Avenue of Service: Our most visible programs are in this Avenue: Rotary Youth Exchange which sponsors around 60 exchanges all around the globe per year within our District in mid-eastern Ohio. We also sponsor a Group Study Exchange Team, which provides for groups of about 6 business people from a distant land the chance to visit our District while a group from here visits their home country. World Community Service programs are those which are operated at the local level but reach out worldwide -- and our little club has TWO! One is known as "Poorest of the Poor" and is coordinated by S.P. Wright (330-448-4432). This project, known throughout the world, has collected millions and millions of pounds of used clothing, medical equipment, toys, dry goods, and toiletries and has distributed them around the world, including place in our own country. Recipients are given a new sense of dignity and are better able to make their life better when wearing clothing they could otherwise not obtain. We have sent shipments to Appalachia, Native American reservations, Central America, and India, among others. Clubs all across Ohio and Pennsylvania collect items for us to sort and transport. Help has come from Santisi Trucking Company, Kraft Foods in Kinsman, Ohio, and from the local Air Reserve Base in getting our stuff where it needs to go. The other is Eyes for India, an "adopted" program of a member who transferred to our club from another local club and who brought this second World Community Service program with him. It provides for facilities, equipment, and funding for eye hospitals in India, the member's home country. Another very important International Service program is Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, or RYLA. We participate in the District 6650 weekend, sponsoring scholarships so that three high school juniors, one from each of our school districts, can attend. Community Avenue of Service: These projects affect people right here at home. We collect good-natured "fines" each week during Fellowship Time and use the funds for "Care and Share" which helps local families in immediate need with cash for utility bills, shoes, clothing and more. Our contributions are coordinated through a nonprofit clearing center. We host a Holiday Party for the participants of the Fairhaven Workshop. We collect and distribute Christmas Gifts for children whose parents could not otherwise afford gifts. And we contribute to local groups such as Boy's and Girl's State, local baseball and football teams, and help with small scholarships for graduating seniors, those attending special educational functions, and more. Our Rotary Club needs to grow, and we would be delighted if you are interested enough in who we are and what we do to visit with us at a club meeting. We're sure you will find it an hour and a half well spent.
